This microscopic bacterium MRSA was responsible for more deaths in 2006 than AIDS
I recently came across a powerful article posted on BBC News about a study conducted at the University of Manchester on the affects aromatherapy can have on ’superbugs’ like E. coli and MRSA commonly contracted in hospital settings. They found that three unnamed essential oils destroyed the deadly bacteria in two minutes! Dr Peter Warn, who carried out the research, said: “When I tested the oils in the lab, absolutely nothing grew. Rather than stimulating bacteria and fungi, the oils killed them off.” Hospital-acquired infections, such as MRSA, kill an estimated 5,000 a year.
Traditional anti-bacterial practices may not work on patients with weakened immune systems due to cancer treatments or autoimmune disease, and further, they may be apt to cause more harm than good. It’s no wonder that this research team wanted to look into a more natural solution. Essential oils are extracted directly from plants and flowers found in nature. The word ‘aromatherapy’ wasn’t coined until the 1920’s but the healing properties of these extracts have been used for centuries for healing and wellness by cultures all over the globe. If I had to waiver a guess, I would say these ‘unnamed oils’ could be Tea Tree, Geranium and Oregano. They all have notoriously anti-bacterial properties and each have been tested in other MRSA studies. Any other guesses?

Dr. Oz’s website has recently posted an article talking about the usefulness of Essential Oils as a form of alternative medicine.
“Aromatherapy uses the power of distinctive-smelling essential oils derived from fragrant plants. These wonderful smelling oils hijack stress and promote relaxation by affecting parts of the brain that control mood and emotion. They can be inhaled directly, used in a diffuser that atomizes droplets into the air, or diluted in a solution that is applied on the skin.”

Here is a link to an interesting article about a study on the benefits of Peppermint and Cinnamon when traffic is stressing you out. These scents help with alertness and can ease the frustration that comes along with daily commutes.
One way to add aromas to your car using essential oils is with the electric Car Scenter Diffuser Kit. You can create some calm in the midst of the maddening traffic outside or have an energizing scent ready for early mornings. It is easy to switch between scents with scent pads that are inserted into the diffuser, once a few drops of oil are added.

We have a new antibacterial recipe to share with you, designed to help ward off germs naturally during the cold and flu season. Using a combination of 100% pure tea tree, lime essential oils, and a choice of unscented lotion, gel or mist, this natural immunity booster is the perfect accessory for back to school. It is a great alternative to alcohol-based antibacterial gels which can be drying.
Escents’ Antibacterial Recipe can be custom blended in-store at the Escents Blending Bar, or the components can be purchased on-line and blended at home using the following ingredients:
1. 80 drops tea tree essential oil
2. 20 drops lime essential oil (substitute any citrus)
3. 250 ml / 8 oz unscented lotion
The recipe can be blended using a lotion as described, an unscented comfrey gel or a mist base depending on the users preference. *Adjust recipe according to the volume of unscented product used. 12 drops of essential oil should be used per 1 oz unscented product.

The ladies at Escents Whistler are interested to know that chef Gordon Ramsay and his TV show Hell’s Kitchen are going to be shooting in Whistler. Lisa from the Willowbrook location is pretty excited too–she may have to arrange a field trip! I wonder if Ramsay knows that you can cook with essential oils? Hmmm….
Mariana at the West Broadway location wanted to share a product tip with our readers:
“Did you know that you can use our leave in conditioner before you use a flat iron? You will be protecting your hair from the heat as well as from environmental damage like sunshine and chlorine. Just try it!
Will do, Mariana!

Nina just sent me an email to let me know about a great, heartwarming story from the Park Royal location.
A woman had been in a car accident, and was in terrible pain all the time. She came into the store several months ago, and the ladies at Park Royal gave her arthritis cream for her sore muscles; that was working fine until the poor woman got Bursitis on top of everything else. She couldn’t lift her arm higher than 35 degrees! So they mixed her up some comfrey gel with peppermint, and she was using that on her arm as well. She would put on the arthritis cream at night, and in the morning switch to the comfrey and peppermint.
Writes Nina: “She just walked in with a big smile…She can now lift her arm up to 80 degrees and is no longer in as much pain. She looked amazing. She was glowing. She is so happy, and refers people to our store all the time.”
Now if that isn’t a lovely story to start a rainy wednesday morning, I don’t know what is. Have you had an interesting personal experience at Escents? Send it in, I’d love to post it here! Big thanks to Nina and the Park Royal girls.
