We have Vida T-Rad joining us as Store Manager at Coquitlam, and Dawn Hartshorne was a sales associate at Commercial before starting in Victoria as store manager earlier this month. Welcome, Vida and congrats, Dawn! Dawn’s favourite product:
“The Tahitian Vanilla Jar candle. I absolutely loooove this candle not only is it a pure and natural soy base that can be used to moisturize your skin when warm, but it makes your entire room smell like fresh baked cookies. You almost want to eat it!”

The ladies at Escents Whistler are interested to know that chef Gordon Ramsay and his TV show Hell’s Kitchen are going to be shooting in Whistler. Lisa from the Willowbrook location is pretty excited too–she may have to arrange a field trip! I wonder if Ramsay knows that you can cook with essential oils? Hmmm….
Mariana at the West Broadway location wanted to share a product tip with our readers:
“Did you know that you can use our leave in conditioner before you use a flat iron? You will be protecting your hair from the heat as well as from environmental damage like sunshine and chlorine. Just try it!
Will do, Mariana!

Last week I had a family emergency and had to leave town in a rush. When I got back to my apartment yesterday, I discovered that I had left bananas out in the fruit bowl. I’m sure you can imagine what greeted me in the kitchen: a pile of rotten black bananas and fruit flies everywhere! Ugh.
I don’t have any Bug Off spray kicking around the house, and the dry-oil base is ideal for skin, not countertops. I did have the Bug Off blend, but diffusers weren’t going to work for me this time; I needed something to blast the problem right at the source. So after I took away the offending fruit, I put some water in a spray bottle, added a dash of rubbing alcohol and 20 drops of Bug Off. The rubbing alcohol helps the oil disperse in the water. If you need a quick spray mist, this works like a charm and you can use this trick with any essential oil or aroma blend.
I opened the windows, shook up my bottle and sprayed the entire kitchen. Ten minutes later that cloud of fruit flies was gone. They weren’t sticking around with all of that lemongrass in the air! Aimee: 1, Fruit Flies: 0.
Now if only I could remember not to leave fruit around in the first place…

Jessica (District Manager) says, “I love the bath melt bars! My bath smells fabulous and my skin is so soft and smooth afterwards! If anyone should try something new, the Willow bath melt bar gets my vote.”
Mariana (Manager, West Broadway location) says, “My favorite product is the unscented salt scrub. I love the fact that the salt is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. The exfoliation is deep and the price is fantastic.”
My favourite Escents product is the Lavender Provence Gentle Scrub. I love how it smells, and the lavender helps tone down redness in my pale skin.
What’s your favourite, and why?

Nina just sent me an email to let me know about a great, heartwarming story from the Park Royal location.
A woman had been in a car accident, and was in terrible pain all the time. She came into the store several months ago, and the ladies at Park Royal gave her arthritis cream for her sore muscles; that was working fine until the poor woman got Bursitis on top of everything else. She couldn’t lift her arm higher than 35 degrees! So they mixed her up some comfrey gel with peppermint, and she was using that on her arm as well. She would put on the arthritis cream at night, and in the morning switch to the comfrey and peppermint.
Writes Nina: “She just walked in with a big smile…She can now lift her arm up to 80 degrees and is no longer in as much pain. She looked amazing. She was glowing. She is so happy, and refers people to our store all the time.”
Now if that isn’t a lovely story to start a rainy wednesday morning, I don’t know what is. Have you had an interesting personal experience at Escents? Send it in, I’d love to post it here! Big thanks to Nina and the Park Royal girls.

People new to Escents products often ask about the difference between essential oils and our Aroma Blends, so I thought I’d throw up a quick reference:

Since Escents has so many aroma blends, I thought it would be a good idea to have a regular feature on this blog where we profile different blends and talk about their properties and uses. I’m going to start today with one of the most popular: Rejuvenating.

Rejuvenating’s two top notes are Bergamot and Grapefruit. It is found in the ENERGIZE mood bay. Rejuvenating was one of the first blends that Jacqui MacNeill, Escents CEO, ever blended and sold; it has been a consistent hit since its inception.
Properties of Bergamot (Citrus bergamia):
- Bergamot is named after the town of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the fruit was first cultivated in the 18th century.
- Bergamot provides the flavouring for the famous Earl Grey tea and is an ingredient in the original Eau de Cologne which originated in Cologne, Germany in the 18th century.
- Bergamot has refreshing, stimulating and uplifting properties that are welcome when we feel fatigued, stressed or anxious.
- Bergamot is useful for balancing scents that people may find too sweet.
- Bergamot is a photosensitizer: see the bottom of this post for more information.
Properties of Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi):
- The grapefruit evolved as a cross between a pomelo and orange, improving on the flavour of the ancient pomelo.
- The essential oil imparts a citrus aroma reminiscent of grapefruit rind, but more concentrated.
- Grapefruit oil, unlike most other citrus oils, is not a photosensitizer.
- Grapefruit oil has an astringent effect, making it useful for the treatment of oily skin and acne.
There you have it! “Rejuvenating” in a nutshell. You can see that it’s aptly named. Escents’ Rejuvenating products can be found here. My personal favourite is the Rejuvenating handmade soap. Its orange and white stripes look lovely sitting on my soap dish, and it is a great scent to help gently wake you up while you shower.
